Track Eligibility Requirements

Due to their nature, eligibility for each track will be based on the following:

Legislature Track - available all 3 weeks

All students are eligible to participate in the Mock Legislature track. It is available all three weeks. First-year* students will be members of the House, and returning students will be Senators.

Additionally, first-year* students who have fully participated (were not absent for any part) in an Onsite Program may be members of the Senate instead of the House, as they have already participated in a Mock Legislature once at the Onsite.

Business Track - available week 1

To qualify, you must be either: 1) returning for your 3rd, 4th or 5th year, OR 2) a 2nd-year student entering your Junior or Senior year of high school.

Judicial Track (Mock Trial OR Moot Court) - available week 2

To qualify, you must be either: 1) returning for your 3rd, 4th or 5th year, OR 2) a 2nd-year student entering your Junior or Senior year of high school.

Media Track - available all 3 weeks

To qualify, you must be either: 1) returning for your 3rd, 4th or 5th year, OR 2) a 2nd-year student entering your Junior or Senior year of high school.

Third-year* and above students have the opportunity of participating in the Mock Media as one or more of the following: reporters, photographers, columnists, etc. for the SSI three times/week newspaper, and/or producers, reporters, anchors, camera operators, or video editors of the twice weekly SSI newscast.

Because this program is intense and will utilize sophisticated technology, it is open only to a handful of students in each of the three weeks. Based on a recent survey to alumni, this will be a popular track, and students should register as soon as possible to reserve a spot.

First-year* students will be members of the House of Representatives and give a press conference and be interviewed by the press.

Second-year* Legislators will be both Senators and reporters, reporting on the House bills that will be announced at press conferences given by (first-year) Representatives.

In other words...

First-year* students will be members of the House of Representatives in the Mock Legislature Track, unless they have fully participated in and On-Site program. In this case, they may participate as Senators.

Second-year* students will be Senators in the Mock Legislature Track, UNLESS they are entering their Junior or Senior year in high school. In that case, they are eligible and may participate in the Business, Mock Trial, Moot Court or Media tracks if space allows when the registration is received at SSI.

Third-year, fourth-year, & fifth-year* students have the option of participating in any track, although the Business, Mock Trial, Moot Court and Media tracks are expected to fill quickly, as a limited number of spaces is available in each track.

*Note: First-year students are those attending SSI's Summer Program for the first time. Second-year students are attending the Summer Program for the second time, and so on. It has nothing to do with what high school year you're entering.
