Letter to the Editor #3

I would like to address the misunderstanding about homeschoolers. I am 17 years old and have been homeschooled my whole life. Whenever someone hears that I am homeschooled, the very first question that is asked is "Do you get any socialization?" It is very sad to think that the world thinks of us as unsocialized and sheltered.

Many homeschoolers offer a Co-op program where they can go and be taught by either homeschool parents or certified teachers. These programs can have up to 500 kids in them. These groups also offer sports teams and gym classes. Some even offer a graduation ceremony and a prom every year. I myself attend a Co-op, a gym class, play on a sports team, and I will be participating in the graduation ceremony for this year. I get to see my friends almost everyday during the school year, and just as many times in the summer.

Homeschoolers have many accomplishments. Most of us get very good grades and have moved on through college and passed with flying colors. My 22 year old sister, who was homeschooled through highschool, just finished college and earned her Nursing Degree. Both I and my brother have been accepted into the National Technical Honor Society at the Career Center in Jackson, and I am now one of the NTHS Co-presidents, and we are homeschooled.

Homeschoolers are also involved with public schools. Some go to a Career Center and take vocational classes; some attend classes in the public school for a few hours of their day. And many of us are dual enrolled in college classes.

So if you know of a homeschooled family in your area, get to know them really well, and meet all of their friends, too. We are just like you.
