Job Shadow Report
My day started off with me showing up at Representative Rick Jones' office, only to be met by his very exuberant secretary. She, extremely excitedly, started throwing stacks of papers at me, telling me to read them quickly before Rep. Jones comes in. According to her, these 3 12-15 page reports will tell me everything I need to know about what I will be hearing in session and the committee meeting today. I frantically start to read them, only to be stopped about 90 seconds later by the representative who was arriving to work for the day. He quickly said that we were already late for our committee meeting, and to bring the reports to it, to fill up the "dry spots" during the meeting. So, we went downstairs and hurried into the room. Even though we were about ten minutes late, only about half of the members were there, most of the rest showed up soon after us. I guess everyone's watches were broken that day.
After the long committee meeting, we went back to his office. There, he made some phone calls and excited some people by telling them that he would endorse them for the Primary in August. Then, he and one of his secretaries went over his extremely hectic schedule for the coming up week. These legislators are some busy people! Almost every minute of his day is filled with things from gong to retirement parties, fundraisers, making appearances in different groups of his constituents, walking in parades, reading books to children, working for his campaign, to being in session and committee meetings, or caucus meetings.
Next, I went with him to go visit a group of disabled children that were touring the capitol. He said that he would not be able to count the amount of groups and different people he has just showed up and said hi to. But the kids were pretty excited to see a "famous person." So that was pretty cool.
Then was the most important event of the whole day: lunch. We went to a small restaurant called Kewpee's. There, we talked about everything from colleges, to soup, to how his secretary's grandparents met there. After we survived the pouring rain, we headed back to the office; it was almost time to go to session.
While we were in session, one of the coolest things of my life happened..They brought in the Stanley Cup! It was amazing! They brought in out on the House Floor and everyone got their picture taken with it.
So that was my day with State Representative Rick Jones. I learned a lot about time management, being enthusiastic about what you do, and doing all things for the glory of God.
