Bible Study: Truth
Truth is defined as the property (as of a statement) of being in accord with fact or reality. (Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary)
Verses referring to truth:
Deuteronomy 32;4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.
Psalm 86:15 But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.
Proverbs 3:3 Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart,
John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Above verses explained:
Deuteronomy 32:4 In this verse the first word, "He" is referring to God. Truth is one of God's many characteristics. In this verse truth is used in conjunction with the characteristic justice. The definition of justice is "conformity to truth, fact, or reason". Truth was one of the words which defines justice. Justice cannot exist without truth!
Psalm 86:5 This is another verse which affirms that truth is one of the characteristics of God.
After examining those last two verses, one can come to the conclusion that truth is an attribute of God. 1 Peter 2:21 says, "To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps." Christians are to follow Christ's example and tell the truth.
Proverbs 3:3 Never forsake truthfulness. Keep it with you at all times.
John 8:32 Knowing the truthreleases one from bondage.
John 14:6 This verse really reveals the secret to obtaining the truth. It says that "I", referring to Christ, am the truth. To seek truth we must seek Christ. He is truth!
How Christians should respond to this study:
- Remember that one of the attributes of God is truth
- We must follow Christ's example and embrace truth.
- Remember that Christ is truth. When searching for the truth of a matter, one need only seek Him.
- One can do nothing good on one's own. In order to be truthful and embrace truth one must ask for God's help in the matter.
- Justice is defined by truth. America is a country, which is based on justice. However, there is no one America can insure they are being just if they do not first seek out the truth of a matter.
