Volunteering for a Political/Social-Action Organization - Right to Life
To complete my ten hours of volunteer service for a political or social action organization, I had intended to work for Citizens for Traditional Values. However, when I called CTV's office, the lady I talked to said they had a lot of interns and there was really not much for me to do. She recommended I try Michigan Family Forum or my local chapter of Right to Life, and if they didn't need me, she would see what she could do. I decided to try Right to Life since there was one relatively close to my house in Livonia, and Michigan Family Forum is farther away in Lansing.
I decided I would just go over to the Right to Life office and ask in person whether they needed any help, so that I could get to work right away. I found out that I was not needed at that office either, but they referred me to another Right to Life office close by, and suggested I try over there. I did, and as it turned out, they needed the help. They had a of stack boxes containing entertainment books to sell for fundraising, that all needed to be checked. Plus, they were getting ready for a big mail-out the next day. I finished all the boxes the first day, and devoted the rest of my time to the mail-out. The job description was simple: fold the papers, stuff the envelopes, seal the envelopes. So, that is what I did for eight hours, and it was surprisingly fun, even thought there is not much to say about it in a report. I was a part of informing almost all the churches in metro-Detroit of the news from Right to Life and preparing for the annual "life chain." It was great feeling to know that even this simple job made a difference, that I was doing something useful.
As it happens, my mom, who came along to help, ended up as the new Right to Life representative to our church. So, I plan on continuing to volunteer with Right to Life, even when this year's Ambassador League is over. I'm grateful for the Ambassador League, I probably never would have done this, or found out how close our local chapter of Right to Life is, and our church may not even have had a representative from Right to Life if I hadn't taken this time to volunteer. This was a good experience made even better by the fact that I know it will have lasting effects.
