Attending a Legislative Session

While I was participating in the Teen Pact leadership training program, we took a field trip and watched a legislative session. The first hour and a half was spent basically watching the legislators walk around on the House floor talking on their cell phones, and introducing a few select people from the gallery.

One thing that truly struck me about the Michigan House of Representative's legislation meeting was the lack of organization that seemed present, while organization still lurked in the air. I have no idea if the calls the Representative's were making had anything to do with business or not, but it certainly helped make them look important.

During the two hours that we were at the capitol, sitting in the gallery, watching the legislators, no actual legislation was actually discussed or voted on. It apparently was a slow day, but we were not able to stay for the entire meeting, so we went back to our meeting, and learned about the process by which a bill becomes a law, and listened to a speech by Mr. Muffett.

It was still a very good experience to just see most of the legislators in action, and I definitely plan on attending another meeting next spring. The thing that I love so much about this country is that our leaders are all real people! They aren't some strange twisted genius that suddenly decided they wanted to be in power over the whole country. They are real people, like you and me, who decided they were going to make a difference, which just shows you that with God you can do anything.
