The Lordship of Christ

The Bible is consistent in its many characterizations of Jesus Christ as our Lord. The frequency alone indicates that this is a fundamental doctrine. Further study unquestionably confirms this.

Luke records an angel appearing to some shepherds around the time of Jesus' birth. He says, "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." From birth, Jesus was Lord, and His entrance into our world was heralded by a host of angels who praised God the Father for sending His Son.

John echoes this description of Christ as Lord when he records his vision of Christ's second coming to earth in Revelation 19:16, "And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." It really doesn't get any clearer than that - Christ is our King and Lord.

Knowing then that Christ is Lord, we must examine an important facet of this Lordship. In Acts 10:36 it says: "The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ-He is Lord of all-", and Romans 10:12 adds: "For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all (speaking of Christ) is rich to all who call upon Him." These verses undeniably indicate that Jesus Christ is Lord of all things. Everything and everyone is under the direct authority of Jesus.

Nothing more powerfully demonstrated Jesus' dominion over all things than the Resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 says "For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures." In so doing, Jesus not only pardoned the sins of the world; He asserted His dominion over death itself.

This significant event presents an all-important question that each and every individual must answer: Will you allow Jesus to be Lord of your life? Romans 10:13 says, "For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." By accepting Jesus as Savior and ceding control of our lives to Him, we are rewarded with the forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life.

Scripture vigorously propounds the Lordship of Christ. It details that He has been Lord since creation, and will be Lord from now through eternity. It teaches that His dominion is all-inclusive and excludes nothing. It affirms this through the recording of the Resurrection, where Jesus proved that He had rulership over death. Lastly, it teaches that each man is responsible for giving Christ dominion in his/her own life. This last point is perhaps most noteworthy, for in acknowledging that Christ is Lord over our lives we obtain salvation. This truth is simply too important to ignore.
