Mission: Take Action - Interview of a Local Leader #3
Mrs. Bonnie McCorvie has been the Commander of Awana at First Baptist Church, St. Johns Michigan for 10 years.
Q. What is your position of leadership?
A. Awana Commander, St. Johns First Baptist Church
Q. What motivated you to seek your current position?
A. I love the program! I was in Awana as a child, and it was great benefit to me growing up and even now. I love the Lord and I want him to use me the way he wants and show others about Himself.
Q. What training do you think is important to prepare for your position?
A. I was in Awana as a child, and my mother was the Sparks director when I was in high school. I was a leader in Cubbies when my first son was born, and I observed my sister as she was the Awana Commander at another church we attended.
Q. What are the greatest rewards of your job?
A. Seeing the Lord work in people’s lives. Also building relationships with adults and children. Some children are unable to talk with their parents, and leaders who love the Lord can build bonds with them. This is a very nice support system for them later as they grow up.
Q. What are the biggest challenges?
A. Finding leaders! It is very disappointing to hear people say 'I have been with my child all day and need a break, I’m too tried after work, or too busy.' I guess its all the excuses.
Q. What role, if any, does your faith play in your position?
A. The Lord has put me in this position to get the news out about God and how he can change lives.
