Mission: Research - Lordship of Christ

While reading through the Bible or singing Hymn/ chorus at church we have heard God called by many different names. Some of these names are Jehovah and Adonai. Have you ever thought about what these names really mean?

When one sees LORD in our Bible, it is translated from the word Jehovah. Jehovah comes from havah which is a Hebrew word that means "to be or to become." Jehovah or LORD is used 6,823 times in the Old Testament. Since Jehovah means to be or to become does that mean that He will stay the same? Yes, as it says it in Hebrew 8:13, He will be the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. In Exodus 34:6-7 there are many adjectives that describe the LORD or Jehovah. It says that He is compassionate, gracious; slow to anger, and abounding in love and faithfulness. He also loves to all, forgives those who are wicked, rebellious, and sinful, but he punishes those who need to be punished. Jesus claims to be Jehovah when He says, "I tell you the Truth...Before Abraham was born, I am!" John 8:58

Another one of God's name is Adonai which in our Bible is translated as Lord and means Lord, Master. We must more than just accept Him or acknowledge him as Lord. We must do His will. This is said in Matthew 7:21-23 and in Luke 6:46. When we do his will, we are like a servant to Adoina who is our master. We have responsibilities as a servant of God but we also receive benefits for being a servant of his. Mercy, Psalms 123:2; strength through hard times, Judge 6: 14-16; freedom from fear, for He will be our shield, Genesis 15:1. Adonia is Master is over many things. Psalms 2:4 tells us He is over heaven; He is also over the earth as is started in Psalms 8:1, 6-8. He is over the wicked, Psalms 37:12-13; He is over all other gods, Psalms 135:5.

We need to commit to Christ's Lordship as Christians. We need to make him more then someone we just call Lord, or ask into our life. We need to make him our Master. To submit to Christ’s Lordship we need to run the race, set sin aside, endure suffering; fix our eyes on God.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2

It cost us everything to submit to the Lordship of Christ. "In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple." Luke 14:33
