Mission: Action - Letter to the Editor #4

Submitted to the Lansing State Journal

Dear Editor:

As a teen driver, I am very apprehensive about the speed limit change between St. Johns and Ithaca. While it is true that some drivers are already traveling at speeds of 65 M.P.H or more, I am afraid that pushing the speed limit up will only result in them feeling comfortable to go 70 or even 75 M.P.H like they would on a limited access road. The problem is, this road is not limited access. There are places like Uncle John's Cider Mill that are already difficult enough to leave. With a faster speed, I think many motorists (especially ones pulling RVs or boats) will find places like this a nightmare to reenter the flow of traffic. The risk of deadly traffic accidents will be even higher. This new speed limit is not a wise or safe idea. Sure, it would be nice to get through this stretch faster, but at what cost? I'm not sure a few extra minutes added to my day is worth the cost of lives.
