Mission: Take Action - Letter to the Editor #5

Submitted to the Lansing State Journal

Dear Editor:

There is a fundamental problem with the new legislation that State Representative Rick Jones is proposing (Lansing State Journal, "Michigan House bill requires update of speed limits," May 14, 2010). The bill, hoping to address problems such as "speed limit traps," seems to forget why low speed limits are put in place. Low speed limits aren't made to raise revenue; and as the automotive capital of the world they're definitely not made because our cars can't go faster. Speed limits are designed to keep people safe.

Even though revisions have been made to the regulatory speed limits; is it worth increasing the speed if that endangers safety? We may have good drivers, and good people behind the wheel, but as they say "the way to hell is paved with good intentions." This bill ignores the safety of the people; its beginning was a man going 12 miles per hour over the speed limit. According to the Michigan Point System that's called "careless driving."

I don't care to have careless driving become the norm.

Sincerely,

Richard P.
