Summer Program Report

Record Breaking Year

The greatest number of students EVER attended the 2011 Summer Program. 320 young people attended during one (or more) of three dynamic and exciting weeks! Throughout the spring our registration numbers were up and when all was said and done, we saw an increase of 28 students over last year. Additionally, 150 adult and college age volunteers gave of their valuable time, and if you add promoters, parents and organizations, nearly 800 people were involved in some way.

Leadership Development the SSI Way

This year, SSI featured eight different leadership simulations. The Mock Legislature ran each week with the first-year students role-playing as members of the Michigan House of Representatives and second-year students serving as State Senators. The Media Track, with both print and broadcast teams, also ran all three weeks. Other advanced simulations included the Business Track during Week One, the Judicial Track with a Mock Trial and Moot Court during Week Two, and our brand new Campaign Track launched during Week Three. Each aspect of SSI blends together to form a microcosm of the world in which every student for that week becomes a leader in their field. Through competition, peer review, public speaking, critical thinking and teamwork, these future leaders learn what it is like to move beyond their comfort zones and rise to a whole new level. And, they tell us it is challenging but thrilling at the same time.

It would be impossible to relate all of the powerful and life-changing events that happened this year. I wish you could attend the final session at the end of each week to hear teenagers talk about the profound impact of SSI in their lives. And, it is always amazing to hear parents talk about the change in the lives of their children.

SSI in the News

The Lansing State Journal featured SSI in an article published immediately following Week Three. The reporter spent a lot of time observing the Legislative Session, asking questions and conducting interviews with students. The result was a great article that captured SSI in a wonderful way. We especially loved the headline, “NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS DESCEND ON LANSING.”

Thank you to everyone who donated time, talent and treasure to make this year’s SSI a smashing success.
