OnSite Report

Lansing Area Homeschool Groups Onsite Report, November 20-21, 2006, at Great Lakes Christian College

Our final two-day program of the year was graciously hosted by Great Lakes Christian College. Although GLCC has traditionally been the home of the SSI Summer Program, this was our first time working together during the school year.

Students from New Covenant Christian School, CHESS Home School Group, and other mid-Michigan home schoolers spent two action-packed days learning teamwork, critical thinking, leadership and citizenship, all while role-playing as Michigan Legislators.

Fifteen community leaders gave of their time to serve as Committee Chairs and lobbyists, including: former State Senator Norm Shinkle; Cooley Law Professor William Wagner; Right to Life Legislative Director Ed Rivet; Freedom Works Michigan Director Randall Thompson; GLCC President Larry Carter; CBMC Lansing Director Mike Winter; Pastor Craig Dumont; and other professional lobbyists and legislative aides.

The final debate was awesome, and students presented well thought-out arguments on both sides of some very difficult issues. As is always the case, we received a great response from the students, teachers, parents and volunteers.

- James Muffett, SSI Founder & President
