OnSite Report

Master's Academy of Fine Arts OnSite, May 17-18, 2007

Our final spring 2007 SSI Program was hosted by The Master's Academy of Fine Arts for the first OnSite ever in Macomb County. We were joined by a few students who had already attended the Summer Program and some siblings of SSI alums as well. Many thanks are due to Bethany Baptist Church for graciously providing their facilities for our use. Tracey Herrington, whose daughter is one of those alums for whom SSI was truly a life-changing experience, served as the organizer and did an outstanding job. The Master's Academy is headed up by Carla Jordan who was also a great blessing throughout the event-and she even served as one of our lobbyists for a Committee Hearing. I must say that sometimes the adult lobbyists appear to be having a little too much fun!!

As usual the learning curve for the students was incredible. They progress through the initial swearing-in ceremony, caucus strategy sessions, a Committee Hearing and finally the big debate on the House Floor. People who witness the students debating during the legislative session are always amazed by their grasp of the issues, the arguments formed and the high quality of the speeches.

Among the various components of SSI, the Committee Hearings are always a very important catalyst for the students. The adult leaders who volunteer their time, talent and expertise provide a unique interactive experience that really helps provide a wider context for understanding the issues being discussed. In other words, the light comes on for the students, and for me, that's worth it all.

Our list of volunteer Community leaders included State Senator Alan Sanborn, County Commissioners Phyllis DeSaele, Keith Rengert and Leon Drolet and Clinton Twp. Supervisor Robert Cannon. In addition we were joined by a local pastor, some local businessmen and a few parents. In fact, for one bill, the lobbyists in support and opposition were Mr. and Mrs.Weiksner-husband and wife. That probably does not foster domestic tranquility, but it was a lively exchange!!

The Weiksner's daughter, Amy, attended SSI years ago and after shadowing and interning with Senator Sanborn in high school and college, she now serves as his scheduling assistant and according to the Senator is doing a great job!! Way to go Amy!!!
