OnSite Report
Teenworks, March 9-10, 2007
Our third On-Site for 2007 was sponsored by
Teenworks, a successful tutoring service for home
school families in Grand Ledge, Michigan. Although many Teenworks students have participated in our Summer
Program and various other On-Sites over the years, this was our first official event with them, and it was
a great success. Thanks to Teenworks Director Wanda Burdick and Office Manager Emily Muffett. Yes, that's
my daughter! Once again the students were assisted by a stellar group of adults who gave up some extra
sleep on a Saturday morning to participate as Chairs and lobbyists for the Committee Hearings. In addition
to the volunteer business leaders, teachers and parents we were also joined by State Representative Rick
Jones, former State Representatives Scott Hummel and Jack Horton and Grand Ledge City Councilman Kalmin
Smith.
During the VIP reception after the Committee Hearings, Rick Jones exhorted the students to take their civic
responsibilities seriously and offered to help secure legislative internships for those who were interested.
Scott Hummel added that there are many young people, including a number of SSI alumni, who are now working
in and around the State Capitol.
The student response during this On-Site was exceptional due to the fact that most of them are already
involved in debate through Teenworks. There was little of the initial hesitation we often encounter among
the students and in the final session, the student speeches were well thought out and excellently presented.
This was due, in no small way, to their teacher Wanda Burdick, who is an excellent debate coach and has a
passion to see young people learn to articulate their ideas and their faith. In fact, since the beginning
of SSI, Wanda has been a valued speaker for our Summer Program on this topic.
It was a joy and great honor to work with such an outstanding group of young people and, as always, we pray
that the seeds planted and the lessons learned will bear a lifetime of fruit in the hearts and minds of
these future leaders.
