OnSite Report
Grace Bible College, August 20-22, 2008
For the first time in the history of SSI, we conducted the Onsite Program for a college group. Although, we've partnered with various colleges and universities throughout Michigan to reach high school students, this is a completely new idea. It all started over a year ago, when one of the Board Members of Grace Bible College attended the SSI Banquet in Troy. He got so excited about the program that he went back and urged GBC President, Ken Kemper, to take a look at doing it for their incoming students. One conversation led to another and it was decided that we shared a deep desire to inspire and equip young people to be Ambassadors for Christ and that we should "give it the old college try".
And so, it was decided that SSI would be conducted as a part of the 2008 GBC orientation for 54 incoming freshmen. Most of them were just a few months out of high school and still teenagers, so for me, it wasn't all that different from our normal process. They were, however, eager to learn and really threw themselves into the effort. The staff and teachers at GBC told us that SSI was a great way to jumpstart the students critical thinking, intellectual curiosity and teamwork skills.
Once again we were joined by a stellar cast of state and local leaders including Senator Mark Jansen and State Representative Tom Pierce. Even some of the GBC faculty got in on the action by accepting some lobbying roles. It was also exciting when President Kemper took the gavel for the final legislative session and served as the "Speaker of the House." I want to thank everyone who contributed time, talent and resources to make this such a wonderfully successful event. It was a great new experience and we're excited that Grace Bible College is already talking about next year!
