Lenawee Christian School, October 19-20

Lenawee Christian School in Adrian, MI

This was our 4th SSI Onsite at Lenawee Christian, and we are very excited about the continued opportunity to work with their students each year. Once again, this program was made possible through the generosity of the Orville and Ruth Merillat Foundation. Ruth's friendship and continued support is a source of great encouragement. Lenawee Christian School is an incredible ministry that grew out Orville and Ruth's vision for Christian education. The school is attached to the Christian Family Centre, another Merillat idea providing unique opportunities for recreation and the arts in a Christian environment. As always, it was a blessing to work with Gary Smelser, the LCS Government Teacher, who is also a great fan of SSI.

Student giving a speech at the Lenawee Onsite We were honored to be joined by a great lineup of local leaders including former Congressman Tim Walberg, former State Representative Doug Spade, Lenawee County Commissioners Karol Bolton and Don Welch, Adrian School Board Member Deanne Henegan, and Nancy Jenkins who serves as the District Representative for State Senator Cameron Brown. Joining them were local business leaders, pastors and three SSI alumni who saw this as an opportunity to give back. They had experienced SSI from the student perspective and now they were on the other side of the table, serving as lobbyists. In fact, two of those alumni testified in the committee that I was chairing and they did a fabulous job.

I want to give special thanks to Kris Yeutter, who volunteered her time to recruit and schedule all twenty adult VIP's for the Committee Hearings. She went above the call of duty and really helped make this program a great success. And we cannot forget Amanda Mitchell, another SSI alumna, who volunteered both days and was a tremendous blessing with all of the administrative details.
