OnSite Report

Jackson Christian School

It was a great joy to work with the students and staff at Plymouth Christian Academy once again. This was our fifth annual pilgrimage to PCA, and when I asked Kelly Gillette, the PCA Government teacher, why SSI has become such an important part of his curriculum he said, “We continue to invite the Student Statesmanship Institute back to PCA because what they present allows our students to apply previous learning in our Social Studies and Bible courses and ties together our school goals of critical thinking skills and writing skills. The mock legislative exercise combined with the Christian Worldview teaching sessions takes learning from conceptual to practical application. Many students comment afterwards that this activity has enabled them to “connect the dots” and deepens their understanding of citizenship and governmental processes.” This was an exceptional group of students, and it is obvious that they are well-taught. Congratulations to PCA and Kelly Gillette for a job well done.

Our group of VIP’s for the PCA Onsite included former State Representative and Canton Township Supervisor Phil LaJoy, Wayne County Commissioner (and wife of Michigan’s Attorney General) Laura Cox, 34th District Court Judge Tina Brooks-Green, State Senate Candidate Colleen McDonald, and SSI Onsite alumna Elyse Losen.

Very special thanks are due to Vesta Losen, John Losen, who went the extra mile helping to recruit the VIP’s and with his wife Susette graciously hosted me for two nights. Also, Mr. Fred Kummer, who is a faithful friend and tireless volunteer for our SSI Programs, gave nearly two days of his valuable time to invest with us in the next generation.

And finally, we are indebted to our generous underwriters, Larry and Sally Butler and Mr. Carl Evans. It is wonderful to have friends and supporters who share our vision and are willing to come alongside and help in whatever way they can.
