Plymouth Christian Academy Onsite

February 16 & 17, 2011

OnSite Report

Our sixth annual Onsite Program at Plymouth Christian Academy included PCA seniors along with some local home school students for a challenging two-day adventure in citizenship. The student response was so encouraging. One mom wrote told us that her son and a friend were both signed up under duress and that they are now "converts" to SSI and want to do the Summer Program. Other students said that this was a much more interesting learning experience because it was so realistic and hands-on. The level of debate for this Onsite was extremely high! These young people really "got it." PCA's Government Teacher, Kelly Gillette, said that SSI is an important part of their curriculum that he looks forward to each year.

The VIP's for this Onsite included former State Senator Bruce Patterson and former State Representative and Candidate for Congress Rocky Raczkowski. In fact, Senator Patterson Chaired the "SSI Committee" debating a Bill that came before him while he chaired a real Senate Committee. In his welcoming remarks to the VIP's, PCA Superintendent Dr. David Butler said that SSI has been an incredibly positive experience for many of their students over the years. It was wonderful to hear him talk about the young people who have gone on to choose academic and professional careers in public service as a result.

Thanks are due to our outstanding SSI alumni; Chelsea Hackel, Elizabeth Hunt, Andrew Montgomery and Dave Raney who volunteered their time to make this Onsite a great success. In addition, SSI alums Simeon Kraft, Andrew Losen and Dave Raney served as Lobbyists for the Committee Hearings. Afterward Simeon said, "I survived the scrutiny of Chairman Bruce Patterson while lobbying at the Student Statesmanship Institute's onsite program at PCA. I'm quite pleased with myself." We are indebted to John and Vesta Losen for their help in recruiting the VIP's, and for providing a place to stay! You are a blessing! And last, but not least, special thanks to Kelly and Jonelle Gillette for coordinating the event for PCA.

In every acorn there are a thousand forests, and we know that every seed we plant in the heart and mind of a young person can-and will-bear a lifetime of fruit in their lives.
